Stifford Rd – Section 278 Highways Essex

Client: Tennens Duration: 9 Weeks Value: £175K - £225K

SB Civil Engineering were awarded these section 278 highways works on behalf of Howard Tennens along Stifford Road in South Ockendon Essex.

The new Carriageway alignment  as stipulated in the section 278 agreement was set out in accordance with the setting out drawings. The new PCC gullies were laid to line and level on a bed of ST4 concrete. The vegetation in the existing highways entrance was removed. Full depth carriageway construction was then carried out.

The type 1 was spread by hand to the required level and compact using a twin drum vibrating roller to highways specification. The sub base will be checked for depth prior to any highway asphalt works to ensure the specified asphalt depth is achieved as noted in the S278 drawings. Kerbing pins will be set up to line and level for the new proposed kerb line and string lines set to line and level.

On completion of the new S278 kerb line the existing asphalt will be punctured using the breaker attachment and receive certified top soil to continue the grass verge. The S278 footway adaptions were made and new blister paving laid to line and level on a sand/cement screed. The area to the front of the new kerb line closing the exiting entrance was milled to the required depths to receive the specified step joint tie in detail. Highways asphalt surfacing will be laid in front of the new kerb line including the step joint area and on the new section of footway.

The completed Section 278 works package  – the sealing off of the original entrance and creation of the new site entrance off of the existing Stifford Road has made this a safer road scheme in Essex.
