What Is Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is a term used to describe the construction and design of public works. This includes a variety of projects such as dams, bridges, sewers and other infrastructures. Not to mention, section 278 highway works. It is an old craft and early engineers constructed wells, walls and roads.

The purpose of civil engineering is to help people live easier and safer lives. For example, providing access to clean water, removing waste and improving street navigation.

What Does Civil Engineering Involve?

Civil engineering includes the construction and maintenance of a range of projects such as roads, buildings, airports and tunnels. Apart from these enterprises, a civil engineer is also responsible for site preparation activities like excavation and earth moving.

In addition, civil engineers write specifications for the long-term durability of structures, while considering destructive or nondestructive testing of performance.

The Knowledge Of A Civil Engineer

Civil engineers must have an advanced understanding of hydrology, geology, maths and physics. Furthermore, they have knowledge of a wide range of construction materials like concrete and steel. Plus, an understanding of structural and mechanical engineering.

Therefore, engineers are able to create structures that are energy-efficient, durable, reliable, safe and cost-efficient.

Civil engineers are involved at every stage of a construction project. This includes construction phases from grading, earth moving and then painting and finishing. Beside other tasks such as site selection, writing material specifications, reviewing subcontractor bids and ensuring compliance with building codes.

Where Does An Engineer Work?

Many civil engineers work in the office and conduct all relevant processes there. However, there are others who are outdoors most of the time on construction sites so they can monitor projects or solve any problems on-site.

Engineers in the private sector primarily work for large construction contractors or as consultants. Additionally, government institutions like transport and the military employ civil engineers too.

To become a civil engineer you need to first achieve a bachelor’s degree in engineering. You may also require some external qualifications to be a fully fledged practitioner.

To get promoted a masters degree may be required to be aware of advances in technology, equipment and computer software.
