SB Civils were awarded the contract as a highways approved contractor on behalf of Hill Partnership to carry out S278 works at Friends School in Saffron Walden Essex.

Footway Works – On completion of the excavation the traffic signal duct were laid on a sand bed and surround with warning tape placed above. The ducting access chambers were installed on a concrete base and received a concrete surround in accordance with the manufactures installation and Essex Highways specification. All ducting from chamber to chamber have draw cords installed in the ducting using a cobra wheel. The section 278 footway trench work then received MOT type 1 sub base back fill and was compacted using a trench compactor. All highways approved blister paving and kerbs was laid on a bed of ST4 concrete to line and level. The Essex Highways specified asphalt material for all trenches and footway reinstatement was transported to site on the 3.5 tonne truck due to tight working areas and laid to the S278 required specification.

Carriageway Works – When the section 278 road closure was in place the extent of junction surfacing was marked on the ground using contractor spray paint. Cold milling was carried out at the required highway locations within the junction. The Essex Highways specified Asphalt was transported to site, machine laid and compacted to the required specification. On completion of the macadam surfacing the anti-skid surfacing was completed in accordance with the section 278 construction issue drawings.

This was a difficult projects due to the close proximity of the residential housing and school. We worked as best we could with the local residents.
