Key Specialist Groundworks: Raised Planters, Paving, Soft Landscaping & Town Centre Clock Installation in a very busy Public Realm area in front of the Council Offices in Basildon Essex.
Compass Square specialist groundworks were part of the regeneration of Basildon town centre in Essex. We were contracted as principal contractor by B.D.C to carry out the improvement works in Compass Square. Our rating on Constructionline of 9.67 from 10 when the national average is only 8 was no doubt an aid in securing the works. The health & safety of the operational site was of paramount importance on this project. This was an extremely busy square with a market on its edge. The timescale was to be strictly adhered to without any compromise to the safety of the market workers, members of the general public & school children using the square in their breaks.
The works involved demolishing brick planters, constructing new raised brick planters, the soft landscaping within the new planters, over 450 square meters of new Specialist Marshals Saxon Buff paving & installing the conservation piece which was the historic town centre clock which was originally installed some forty years ago. The conservation and storage of the Clock was down to us prior to its erection. Such a success was the reinstatement of the clock tower that members of the press came to record the moment for posterity. A contract crane lift ensured the installation of this spherical clock was completed safely in this busy town centre.
As with all public realm works project management and a proactive approach to health & safety are key to ensuring both employee & public safety, we controlled the project from producing the pre-construction H&S Plan through to the creation of the Operations &Maintenance Manual & H&S File at project end. We worked closely with Basildon Council & their management team Jacobs Engineering UK to deliver this scheme safely, on time, with no complaints & as always to an exceptionally high standard.
