Solar Farm Access Road & S278 Construction – Cambridgeshire

Client: Sun Edison Duration: 5 Weeks Value: £250k - £500k

As highways civil engineering contractors we were awarded the S278 and access road contract on behalf of Sun Edison one on the largest solar companies in the world. The section 278 and access road contract identified the need to carry out works to create a DNO Access Road at a Solar Farm – Heath Road, Exning Cambridgeshire.

We carried out trial holes to all the areas of concern from the drawings received, or as directed by the Cambridgeshire Highways. We excavated where the new access road would be and levelled. Upon reaching level desired the road was compacted.

A geotextile separating membrane will laid directly over the access road sub soil in accordance with the manufactures instructions. The 6F5 was spread using the JCB 3CX and finished by hand. The 6F5 sub base material for the access road was then well compacted in 150mm layers using a twin drum roller. At least 6 passes of the vibrating roller was required over the access road. This process was to be continued until the whole of the new road was up to sub base level. On completion of the 6F5 road sub base the same process as above was repeated but with MOT type 1.

All work carried out on the public highway for the section 278 works were conducted in accordance with the NRSWA 1991. All above access road and section 278 works were completed within budget, on time, with no complaints and or incidents and the multinational concerned were very pleased with the overall outcome of the works in hand.
